商品簡介

The Stoics and the philosophy of Stoicism in general are a major area of study in both philosophy and classics. The influence of Stoic thought also extends to early literature and science. The Routledge Handbook of the Stoic Tradition is the first volume of its kind, gathering leading philosophers to provide an outstanding guide and reference source to the nature and extent of contemporary Stoicism.

Comprising over thirty chapters by a team of international contributors and organised chronologically, the Handbook is divided into five parts:

  • Late Antiquity, including Stoic influences on early Christianity
  • Stoic influences on Medieval philosophy
  • the Renaissance and Reformation, including Stoic influences on Calvin, Shakespeare and Montaigne
  • Stoicism in Early modern philosophy and science, including Stoic themes in Spinoza, Leibniz, Newton and Kant
  • contemporary Stoicism and its impact on nineteenth century philosophy, American literature and moral philosophers including Martha Nussbaum.

An outstanding resource for anyone interested in the philosophical history and impact of Stoic thought, The Routledge Handbook of the Stoic Tradition is essential reading for students and researchers working on the subject.
