Nieuw-Naderland in de zeventiende eeuw, published by Prometheus/Bert Bakker, Amsterdam, in 1999, and translated by Peter Longbottom. He traces the development of New Netherland, what is now New York, from a trading post into a settlement colony, focusing on how and to what extent culture was transplanted from the Dutch republic to New Netherland, and what factors were of influence on the colonial culture. His use of culture here encompasses such elements as perception, immigration, government, economy, religious, status, material culture, and mentality. Jaap Jacobs, Ph.D. 1999 Leiden University, is postdoc researcher at the Centre for the Study of the Dutch Golden Age of the University of Amsterdam. He has published extensively on the Dutch colony New Netherland and is currently preparing a biography of Petrus Stuyvesant.
