Adaptive Designs for Sequential Treatment Allocation

Adaptive experimental designs are sequential procedures for collecting data. In each step, the observer can use all of the information gathered to determine whether to stop or carry on with the study. This book focuses on recently developed methods in adaptive randomization for treatment allocation. It illustrates designs that take into account past treatment allocations only, discusses procedures that use past data, and presents compromise strategies that deal with ethical issues.

Alessandro Baldi Antognini is a professor of statistics at the University of Bologna. He holds a PhD in statistical methodology for scientific research. His research focuses on the design of experiments, stochastic orderings, sequential experiments, and Markov processes.

Alessandra Giovagnoli, now retired, was a full professor in the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Bologna. Her main research area is the design of experiments, particularly sequential experiments. She is also interested in stochastic order relations and various biomedical and technological applications of statistics. She served on the editorial board ofBiometrika and was associate editor of SMA, the journal of the Italian Statistical Society. She is on the board of Model-Oriented Data Analysis and Optimum Design (MODA), an international association of statisticians who promote research in the area of experimental design and related topics.
