American Furniture ― The Federal Period in the Henry Francis Du Pont Winterthur Museum

First published in 1966, this volume explores the merits of each piece in the Winterthur Museum collection of Federal period American furniture. Montgomery (former director of the Museum, as well as late curator of American art and professor of art history at Yale U.) presents the individual pieces as well as the furniture in its proper environment. Each illustration includes information on the place of origin, date of construction, dimensions, special features and qualities, the maker and original owner when known, and other details. The essays emphasize how the furniture was made and used, thus providing information on the social and cultural history of the period.
