The Handbook for Storytellers

Freeman, a former school librarian, storyteller, and author, and the late Bauer, a public librarian and professor of children's literature, offer a handbook for school and public librarians, teachers, and storytellers to support their programs and curricula and supplement story hours. It includes annotated story lists, book lists, and website lists; suggestions for using storytelling and children's books to create a literature and story-based environment in schools and libraries; storytelling techniques and read-aloud strategies; full texts of many stories; and ideas and activities. The authors describe how to promote the storytelling program; basic techniques for putting together a story hour; how to select, prepare, and tell the story; and sources, including types of folk and fairy tales (with sample stories), folktales from different countries, parodies, literary tales and short stories, picture books, informational books, biographies, family stories, and personal favorites. The original text has been split into two separate texts, The Handbook for Storytime Programs and this text, which includes new stories, poems, songs, plays, and activities, as well as new annotated lists.
