Permeable Reactive Barrier ― Sustainable Groundwater Remediation

This volume contains 13 chapters that detail how to plan, design, model, and apply permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology for the remediation of groundwater from contaminated sites by allowing it to pass through a buried porous barrier that captures the contaminants or breaks them down. Scientists from the US Environmental Protection Agency and universities and companies in Germany, Australia, and Hungary address developments in PRBs; choosing design and construction technologies for them; predictive modeling to assist in design; and applications, including the impact of trace elements and impurities in technical zero-valent iron brands on reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes in groundwater, the assessment of a PRB for the treatment of hexavalent chromium and trichloroethylene, the pretreatment of nitrate and remediation of trichloroethene, the treatment of heavy metals, arsenic, and acidity, radionuclides, reactive gas barrier and zone technologies, and the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, NSO-heterocycles, and related aromatic compounds. Professor Ravi Naidu is the chief executive and managing director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment. He has researched environmental contaminants, toxicology, bioavailability, and remediation for over 20 years. Ravi has co-authored over 500 technical publications and co-edited 10 books in the field of soil and environmental sciences including field remediation of contaminated sites. His current research focuses on the remediation of contaminated soil, water and potential impacts of contaminants to environmental and human health.
