Women's Rituals and Ceremonies in Shiite Iran and Muslim Communities ― Methodological and Theoretical Challenges

Khosronejad organized a workshop in Ascona, Switzerland in June 2007 and invited nine women anthropologists whose specialty is connected with women rituals among Muslim societies. Here essays based on seven of their presentations discuss reenacting the past and negotiating the present in the `Arus-i Qoraysh ritual of Iranian women; sofrih and walima: food as ritual in the Islamic Republic of Iran; Gageriveh; Bakhtiari women's lamentations: between self-suffering and tribal identity; healing rituals among female Turkmans of Iran; feeling, funerals, and female Muslim-Hui in southwest Shandong, China; methodological implications of the researcher's gender and religion: reflections on fieldwork with Sufi women in Istanbul, and women transferring Shia rituals in western migrancy.
