An Ethnography of England in the Year 1685 ― Being the Celebrated Third Chapter of Thomas Babington Macaulay's History of England

In 1849 Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote the “History of England in 1685.” It is today considered to be quite possibly the first ethnographic monograph ever written. Part of a five volume set, Chapter Three is the most iconic. Here it is, presented in its entirety with only minor edits to make it more accessible. Some of the longer paragraphs were broken into shorter paragraphs, and the section headings that were mentioned in the original table of contents, but not the book, were added to the main text. The original spelling and colorful allusions are left intact. Chapter Three is preceded by an extensive introduction in which Robert L. Carneiro expounds upon both the text and Macauley himself.
