A scholar of communication and graphic design, O'Connell explores communicating visually on the Web, whether within a particular cultural sphere or between two cultures or within an intercultural milieu where cultures intermingle. She is not writing about visual culture, she emphasizes, which is another field entirely. She focuses on identifying functional elements within their cultural contexts that do a common thing, and communicating the aesthetic that is culturally anchored.
