The Internet and European Integration ― Pro- and Anti- EU Debates in Online News Media

Michailidou, Trenz, and de Wilde examine the impact of news media on democratic life in Europe. They suggest a rethinking of the relationship between society, media and politics in order to understand what will tip the balance between two realities: on the one hand, distortion and manipulation of online communications on democracy and its potentially catastrophic effects and, on the other, the online world of inclusiveness and creative intelligence contributing to knowledge production, a more even distribution of power and a more participatory democracy. In the context of the EU’s search for new narratives, this book brings together scholarly debates about the promise of digital democracy and ways in which people interconnect at a time when the economic and social significance of national boundaries is undergoing a deep transformation in Europe and beyond.
