Recoded City ─ Co-creating Urban Futures

The future of urbanism is being recoded: no longer the preserve of the external elite, it is being fundamentally affected by the impact of participatory placemaking, putting citizens front and centre of the new open source city. By changing the ways they see their communities, people talk, learn and develop new ways of bringing about positive change to their local environments.

Recoded City is for practitioners and placemakers, architects and designers, planners and urbanists. As professions converge and hybridise, Recoded City is both an inspiration and a practical assessment of what works and how to facilitate change.

The future of cities is about maximizing social equity and social capital – Recoded City shows how it can be done.

Thomas Ermacora is a regeneration architect, impact entrepreneur and thinker. He is the founder of the tactical urban design non-profit Clear Village (Clear-Village.org), delivering participatory initiatives across Europe, and of the Limewharf, a curated cultural innovation hub in east London, both of which create new, imagined engines for the recovery and stimulation of neighbourhoods.

Lucy Bullivant PhD Hon FRIBA is a cultural historian andn award winning award-winning author, critic, exhibition curator, guest lecturer and consultant specialising in architecture, urban design and adaptive planning. She is Adjunct Professor, Urban Design History and Theory, Syracuse University, founder and Eeditor-in-chief of the webzine Urbanista.org, and author of many books, including Masterplanning Futures, published by Routledge in 2012, winner of the Book of the Year Award at the Urban Design Awards, London, 2014.
