Mao's Road to Power: Revolutionary Writings, 1912-49: v. 5: Toward the Second United Front, January 1935-July 1937

When we last saw Mao, he was in the middle of the Long March, threatened with defeat by Chiang Kaishek, who had vowed to exterminate the Communist bandits. Battlefield telegrams, letters, dispatches, and other material much of it not translated before continue the day-by-day account up to the agreement between the Communists and the Guomindang to postpone the decade-old civil war and join together against the invading Japanese. Among the features revealed are the increasingly tense relationship between Mao and Zhang Guotao, the change from denouncing Chiang to forcing him to fight the Japanese, negotiations with representatives of Chiang on one hand and with Zhang Xuelianag and Yang Hucheng on the other, and Mao's reaction to the Xi'an Incident. Also included is a new translation of Mao's Problems of Strategy in China's Revolutionary War including his analysis of military tactics in Napoleon's invasion of Russia and in the First World War, which were deleted from the Selected Works version.
