Crossing Antietam ─ The Civil War Letters of Captain Henry Augustus Sand, Company A, 103rd New York Volunteers

Still ranking as the single bloodiest engagement in U.S. military history, the Battle of Antietam in Maryland in 1862, became 26-year-old Captain Henry Augustus Sand’s Waterloo, when he was mortally wounded by Confederate sharpshooters in the final assault on Sharpsburg. Crossing Antietam displays 73 of his letters from the field to his family in Brooklyn Heights, New York, covering the first 18 months of the war, collected and transcribed by his sister, Emily Isabella Rossire, n<’e>e Sand, together with her watercolors of the battlefield painted in 1863, and includes some watercolors by their younger brother, Maximilian Edward Sand. There are three sections: letters, with documents and news reports; between pages 82 and 83 are 4 color plates containing 10 images; appendix: the Sand-Rossire family of Brooklyn Heights. He formerly taught at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and at Duke Law School in Durham, North Carolina. He lives in Munich, Germany. John F. McLaughlin is a retired professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle. His wife was a descendant of Emily Sand Rossire and preserved the transcriptions of Henry’s letters. He lives in Seattle.
