Forging Islamic Power and Place ― The Legacy of Shaykh Daud Bin ?d Allah Al-fatani in Mecca and Southeast Asia

Bradley examines the origins and development of the Patani (nineteenth-century kingdom along the Malay border region) knowledge networks that became a major force behind Islamic textual and reformist movements in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other parts of the Indian Ocean littoral from the late-eighteenth-to-early-twentieth centuries. He investigates the shifting patterns of social and cultural capital that accompanied its political collapse, the exodus, and the subsequent rise of Islamic scholarship and Pondok (Islamic schools). Some displaced scholars settled in Mecca and were led by scholar Shaykh Da’ud bin ‘Abd Allah al-Fatani, whose many works became foundational for a new text-based type of Islam and ultimately redounded to Southeast Asia to become the core texts throughout the region.
