Citing the disintegration of order and security in Western Europe in the fifth century upon the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, this volume examines the 1200-year period that led to the rise of the nation state. Inspired by Durant, Wells, and Gibbon, Schwartzwald seeks to combine a comprehensive approach to history with a presentation style that has broad appeal while at the same time being concise.
