The Search for Environmental Justice

From the 11th Annual Colloquium of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Academy of Environmental Law, held in Hamilton, New Zealand, in June 2013, the 18 essays here introduce the theory and practice of environmental justice. Law and other scholars from around the world address the fundamental nature of environmental justice, including the legal elements required, sustainability, and biodiversity justice; how human interests are pursued through legal rights and the implications for environmental justice, including human rights, nature rights, and property rights; implementation challenges related to Thailand and Indonesia, freshwater regulation, transnational harm, biotechnology in agriculture, black carbon, and climate change; and indigenous issues and approaches, in terms of water governance in Kenya, indigenous governance in climate change management, and collaboration.
