Communicating Advice ─ Peer Tutoring and Communication Practice

This volume brings together tutoring center and communication specialists from the US for 15 chapters and 11 cases on the role of communication in peer tutoring in higher education. The first section covers the selection and training of tutors, with discussion of the inclusion of communication education in training; the role of quality, evaluation of tutoring center directors, and research on peer tutoring processes; how to build a peer tutoring team; ethics; and managing conflicts. The second section addresses working with diverse tutees, understanding learning styles, connecting with first-year students, dealing with student anxiety, and online communication, followed by a section on the tutoring environment, including building trust through interpersonal communication, constructing credibility, engaging in instructional communication behaviors, understanding the role of customer service, and giving feedback. Wendy Atkins-Sayre (PhD, University of Georgia) is Associate Professor of Communication Studies and the Speaking Center Director at the University of Southern Mississippi. Her work has appeared in Southern Communication Journal, Western Journal of Communication, and Women and Language.
Eunkyong L. Yook (PhD, University of Minnesota) is Associate Professor of Communication at George Mason University and author of two books on communication, education, and culture. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Intercultural Communication and Communication Education. The editors previously co-edited Communication Centers and Oral Communication Programs in Higher Education: Advantages, Challenges, and New Directions (2012).
