The history of human resource development embraces humankind's investment in one another's skills, knowledge, and abilities. As the field transitions into a more mature discipline, there is a need to understand the philosophies upon which certain theories and methodologies are based. Providing a historical narrative of HRD from the beginning of human history through modern times, this book reveals the consistent interaction between the philosophies of the time, theories, and methods of people management and how these philosophies impact what is known as HRD today.

Matthew W. Gosney is Director of Organizational Development for Hillcrest Healthcare System, where he manages the design and implementation of integrated talent management strategy for dozens of hospitals across the US. He has published in People, Technology and Human Resource Development (HRD) Philosophy and The Encyclopedia of E-Leadership, Counseling and Training. Dr. Gosney earned his doctorate in Human Resource and Workforce Development from the University of Arkansas, USA, where he was named outstanding Doctoral Student '09-10.
Claretha Hughes is Associate Professor and Director of the College of Education and Health Professions Honors Program at the University of Arkansas, USA. She has over 23 years of diverse management, supervisory and administrative experience in organizational development and workforce development. She is a member of the Academy of Human Resource Development and Academy of Management, and has published articles in Human Resource Development Review, Journal of Career Development, and Advances in Developing Human Resources. Her book Valuing People and Technology in the Workplace: A Competitive Advantage Framework won the R. Wayne Pace Book of the Year award in 2013.
