Art in History

A survey of art history from the earliest cave paintings to postmodern architecture, with some 600 high quality illustrations, 213 in color. Rather than an artist-by-artist or masterpiece-by-masterpiece examination, Silver (art history, Northwestern U.) treats art within its larger cultural context, explaining how works of art relate to the events and social forces that helped shape them. He also incorporates the research of feminist and minority art historians, and, while the focus is on the mainstream traditions of Western Europe and America, many chapters include sections called "View from Outside," which address the art of non-Western cultures and traditions.
