In this new history of music in Zimbabwe, Mhoze Chikowero focuses on African voices and African sources. Chikowero begins in the 1930s with the music of segregated urban and mining company dance halls and continues through the years of Chimurenga and the music of Thomas Mapfumo in the 1980s. Chikowero explains how black Africans used music as a tool in their fight for freedom, focusing on the powerful channels opened by Africans to assert indigenous knowledge and resist domination.

Mhoze Chikowero is Assistant Professor of African History at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
