The Top 100 American Situation Comedies: An Objective Ranking attempts to compile an objective answer to the question--What are the top 100 best American situation comedies of all time? The authors, both experts in the field of television content with over a combined 70 years in television research and critique, created a mathematical formula for ranking television programs, based on ratings, longevity, peer acceptance, and spawning other programs and applied the formula to create the list presented in this book. Each entry contains information on broadcast history and cast, as well as a discussion on why the entry made the list and reasoning behind its ranking. The book’s appendices include a ranked list of all qualifying situation comedies (close to 400 qualified for consideration for this book), the top twenty-five situation comedies by decade, the top situation comedies by network, and the top twenty-five comedies that aired for one season or less. Mitchell E. Shapiro, a professor in the School of Communication at the University of Miami (Florida), is currently the director of honors (and former academic associate dean). The author of six books, he has published numerous scholarly articles in various journals. Tom Jicha has been writing about TV and radio for 35 years. He was formerly the TV/Radio editor of The Miami News and the TV/Radio writer for the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun Sentinel. He is a former president of the Television Critics Association. He lives in Miami, Florida.
