In a revision of his 2012 doctoral dissertation at the University of Leuven, Lauwers seeks to resolve the debate over whether the imperial Greek author Maximus of Tyre was a philosopher, a rhetor, or a sophist. He begins with an overview of philosophy, rhetoric, and sophistry in the Roman Empire, looking at the traditional conflict, Greco-Roman imperial culture, a functionalist approach, and individual authors. Then he focuses on the 41 dielexeis attributed to Maximus from the perspectives of reading the dielexeis, communication and pedagogy, sophistry, rhetoric, philosophy, purpose and meaning, and the analysis of individual dielexeis. 作者簡介
Jeroen Lauwers, Ph.D. (2012), University of Leuven, is a postdoctoral scholar of Classics and Literary Studies at that university. His interests include Imperial Greek literature, ancient literary theory and criticism, and receptions of the classical world.
