The Intersectional Internet ― Race, Sex, Class and Culture Online

Through 14 essays, scholars working in information studies/library and information science, communications, digital media studies, education, sociology, and psychology in the US, Canada, and Turkey consider intersectional issues related to race, sex, class, and culture online. They examine the Black Lives Matter movement, white online feminist movements, Asian American masculinity and the representation and appropriation of PSY and Gangnam Style's popularity on YouTube, how marginalized groups are using blogs to reconceptualize participation in democratic processes in the US, how networked television creates new opportunities and challenges for queer performers, racially underrepresented populations and their activities and representations of identity in Facebook Groups, and racialized and gendered tropes of Grand Theft Auto V. The second section explores how cultural values are articulated through technology design, including commercial content moderators, the racial and gendered politics of online dating sites, censorship of Facebook and Twitter in Turkey, Latinas in the telecommunications field, race and gender and the development of computer programs, the epidemiology of digital infrastructure, and black girls in popular Instagram memes. Safiya Umoja Noble (PhD, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is an assistant professor in the Department of Information Studies in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. She is co-editor of Emotions, Technology, and Design (2016) and an editorial board member of the Journal of Critical Library and Information Studies.
Brendesha M. Tynes (PhD, UCLA) is Associate Professor of Education and Psychology at the University of Southern California. She is the recipient of the American Educational Research Association Early Career Award and the Spencer Foundation Midcareer Award.
