Remaking Post-Industrial Cities ─ Lessons from North America and Europe

Remaking Post-Industrial Cities brings together leading urbanists from around the world working on revitalizing post-industrial cities. It showcases 11 transformative case studies from North America and Europe which were developed out of the Remaking Cities Congress, where Prince Charles was the Honorary Chair and keynote speaker. Combined these cases present a holistic approach to restoring post-industrial cities. The book discusses key issues and recommendations for post-industrial cities in five thematic areas:

• repositioning the post-industrial city in the global economy

• post-industrialism and the physical city

• the 21^st century city as an innovation hub

• urban systems and infrastructure

• and planning and social innovation.

The cases also cross-cut these themes with issues crucial to the resilience of post-industrial cities including sustainability; doing more with less; public engagement and equity (social, economic and environmental), the most important issue cities face today and for the foreseeable future.

Donald Carter is Director of the Remaking Cities Institute, Carnegie Mellon University. Don is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners, a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, and a member of the Urban Land Institute where he was national Chair of the Inner City Council. Don was Co-Chair of the international Remaking Cities Congress held in Pittsburgh in October 2013.
