Surface Electromyography: Physiology, Engineering, And Applications

This book is an update of the previous book Electromyograqphy: Physiology, Engineering and Non-Invasive Applications. It provides comprehensive coverage of the latest advances in Non-Invasive EMG, and devotes an entire section to all applications. The first chapter is devoted to the physiology of muscle activation, focusing on motor nuclei, muscle unit force, recruitment and rate coding. The second chapter provides insight to single fiber intracellular action potential generation, extracellular potentials, and force generation. Chapter three focuses on the functions of electrocode systems. Chapters 4 and 5 provide detailed analysis on information extraction from the surface of EMG signals. Chapter six provides analysis on muscle synergy and coordination. Chapters 7 and 8 talk about EMG decomposition and modeling. Chapters 9, 10, and 11 focus on muscle fatigue, stimulation, and simulation. Part II of the book focuses on applications in neurophysiology, ergonomics, proctology, exercise physiology, gait analysis, musculoskeletal physical therapy, biofeedback, and neurorehabilitation.

Roberto Merletti is Founding Director of the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System and Professor of Rehabilitation Engineering in the Department of Electronics, Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He has co-authored and authored books such as Atlas of Muscle Innervation Zones: Understanding Surface Electromyography and its Applications (Springer, 2012), and Electromyography: Physiology, Engineering, and Noninvasive Applications (co-editor with P. Parker, Wiley-IEEE Press, 2004).

Dario Farina is Professor and Founding Director of the Institute for Neurorehabilitation Systems at the University Medical Center Gottingen, Georg-August University, Gottingen, Germany. Prof. Farina was the lead editor for Introduction to Neural Engineering for Motor Rehabilitation (Wiley-IEEE Press, 2013).
