Rockenbach examines the effects of the American Civil War with an intimate eye, focusing on two towns, one on each side of the conflict, and separated from each other by ideology and the Ohio River. Corydon, Indiana and Frankfort, Kentucky both shared a sense of frontier spirit and white settlement before the war; subsequent guerrilla raids as well as the seemingly never ending conflict tore apart whatever common spirit the towns shared. The author uses the experiences of common townsfolk, civic leaders, soldiers, and others to paint a personal picture of the towns' views and motivations, relying on primary source material such as letters, newspaper clippings, and correspondences.
