Van Niekerk (Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies, U. of Amsterdam, The Netherlands) examines the similarities and differences in the social and economic adjustment patterns of the Afro-Surinamese and Indo-Surinamese immigrants to the Netherlands. He uses the analysis of the adaptation of the two groups to test the validity of segmented assimilation theory, which contends that immigrant groups occasionally refuse adaptation or adopt the values of "involuntary" minorities.
