The 12 essays presented by the editors (professors of political science at the U. of California and the U. of Southern California) explore the relationship between race, immigration, and political behavior in the United States from 1965 to the present, and as forecast to 2020. Most of the contributions consist of quantitative empirical analyses of political participation and assimilation, but a number prefer to take historical and institutional approaches to the issues. The book is organized into four sections that focus on issues of measurement of race, ethnicity, and immigration; the politics of national and transnational identities and citizenship; institutional mechanisms for politically mobilizing new immigrants; and future trends of immigrant incorporation in the US.
