Globalization and Cyberculture ─ An Afrocentric Perspective

This book argues for hybridity of western and African cultures in the cybercultural/subcultural forms of communication. Kehumba Langmia argues that when both cultures are included in these new forms of digital communication, those in the urban and the rural parts of the African continent can embrace communication, which could help in socio-cultural and political development of the continent. On the other hand, through an analysis the impact of what Richard McPhail has termed “Electronic Colonization Theory,” Langmia details how developing areas like Africa are experiencing another new form of imperialistic subjugation in the form of electronic communication. This book illustrates the effect of not only electronic but digital forms of communication and what can be done to inculcate age-old traditional forms of communications into the new, imported communicative forms in all aspect of cyberculturalism in sub-Saharan Africa.
