Space, Land, Territory, and the Study of the Bible

Writing for professional biblical scholars and graduate students in biblical studies, Russell introduces the interdisciplinary study of space and its related concepts, including land, place, and territory. He offers a synopsis of eight approaches to the study of space and summarizes some of the work being done by biblical scholars in conversation with spatial studies. For a case study, he looks at the story of Naboth's vineyard in 1 Kings 2:1-16 in light of the legal approach to space. Stephen C. Russell, Ph.D. (2008), New York University, is Assistant Professor of Ancient History at John Jay College, CUNY. He is author of The King and the Land (Oxford, 2016) and Images of Egypt in Early Biblical Literature (De Gruyter, 2009). His research focuses on the Hebrew Bible and the political, legal, and religious world that produced it.
