Crime Fiction in and around the Eastern Mediterranean

Sagaster, Strohmeier, and Guth present essays mainly drawn from a conference held by the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia in 2011. These essays address the role of crime fiction in and around the Eastern Mediterranean. Whatever the origins of crime fiction were in the west and the eastern Mediterranean, there seems to be a consensus that crime fiction in the literatures of the eastern Mediterranean region did not start before the first or even the second half of the decades of the twentieth century with some exceptions (Turkey 1884). This book aims to inspire further research by addressing literature scholars in the eastern Mediterranean region with a passion for crime fiction. It interrogates the connection between crime fiction and nation-building, political and social structure--especially gender roles--as well as the attitude of literary criticism (topics already dealt with in the context of western literatures) with some gaps in geography. Contributors investigate eastern Mediterranean crime fiction authors’ literatures from different perspectives.
