Fundamentals of Transference-focused Psychotherapy ― Applications in Psychiatric and Medical Settings

This book introduces clinicians to Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), one of the evidence-based treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder, and its applications in a variety of psychiatric and medical settings. The book offers clear and simple treatments for challenging patients with personality disorders. A short introduction outlines in concise language the core elements of TFP and its origin in object relations theory. The book then takes the clinician through the process of comprehensive diagnosis, negotiation of the treatment frame, and overarching strategies, techniques, and tactics used in individual treatment, including helpful, accessible clinical vignettes. Subsequent chapters build on the literature of TFP in individual psychotherapy, broadening its application to include inpatient settings, family treatment, and pharmacologic management. Each chapter includes a summary of key “take home” points and associated clinical histories used to illustrate theoretical concepts.
