The Poesis of Peace ─ Narratives, Cultures, and Philosophies

Exploring the relations between the concepts of peace and violence with aesthetics, nature, the body, and environmental issues, The Poesis of Peace applies a multidisciplinary approach to case studies in both Western and non-Western contexts including Islam, Chinese philosophy, Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Established and renowned theologians and philosophers, such as Kevin Hart, Eduardo Mendieta and Clemens Sedmak, as well as upcoming and talented young academics look at peace and non-violence through the lens of recent scholarly advances on the subject achieved in the fields of theology, philosophy, political theory, and environmentalism.

Klaus-Gerd Giesen is currently professor of political science at the UniversitAc da€?Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Previously, he has been professor at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and at the University of Leipzig, Germany. In addition, he taught for several years as visiting professor at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and at the Free University in Brussels, Belgium, as well as for shorter periods at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes on Sciences Sociales in Paris, at the UniversitAc de Champagne-Ardenne, and at the Institut da€?Etudes Politiques in Aix-en-Provence. He was visiting researcher at the philosophy department of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and at the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences of the California Institute Technology in Pasadena. He is the author or editor of five books, including (with Kees van der Pijl) Global Norms for the 21th Century. Dr. Carool Kersten is currently Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Study of Islam and the Muslim World, and Deputy Research Director of the Centre for Social Transformations at Kinga€?s College London. He is also a Research Associate at the Centre of Southeast Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. He has studied Arabic and Islamic Studies, international relations, philosophy, Southeast Asian Studies, and religious studies at universities in The Netherlands, Egypt, Thailand, and the UK. He is the author and editor of seven books, including Islam in Indonesia, The Caliphate and Islamic Statehood, and Alternative Islamic Discourses and Religious Authority. Lenart A kof is Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Institute for Philosophical Studies at the University of Primorska, Koper (Slovenia). He was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and a Humboldt Visiting Fellow at the University of Erfurt. His main research interests are in ethics, American pragmatism, the philosophy of Luce Irigaray, and intercultural philosophy. Lenart A kof co-edited Breathing with Luce Irigaray, and authored several monographs, among them Pragmatist Variations on Ethical and Intercultural Life and Breath of Proximity: Intersubjectivity, Ethics and Peace.
