Science and the City: Hamburg's Path to a Built Environment Education

A retrospective look at Hamburg's interdisciplinary approach to landscape studies, both in the past and present day. Dedicated to the HafenCity University Hamburg and their approach to this complex subject. One of Hamburg's earliest official higher education plans for construction professionals was a building and engineering drawing class (Bauzeichenklasse), brought to life back in May 1767. For the following 250 years, the organisation and academic professionalisation of the built environment education in Hamburg has undertaken a long and sometimes winding road through several organisations, times and policies. This book draws a bow from this first initiative, as well as today's HafenCity University Hamburg with its pronounced interdisciplinary strategic profile, which combines all built environment-related disciplines with a socio-cultural reflection on cities and urban society under one roof. Science and the City links three perspectives: it shows Hamburg's organisation of the built environment education from a retrospective, provides insights into institutionalised interdisciplinarity at various institutions, and underlines the interdisciplinary approach at the HafenCity University Hamburg in particular.
