Geotechnics and Heritage ─ Historic Towers

Em. Prof. Carlo Viggiani (1936) graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Napoli in 1969 and was Professor of Foundation Engineering at the same University from 1975 until his emeritus in 2007. He is? Chairman of the International Committee TC301 - Preservation of Monuments and Historic Sites, of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He is also a member of the International Commission for the Safeguard of the Tower of Pisa.

Prof. Alessandro Flora Graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II in 1989. He obtained his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering jointly from the University of Napoli Federico II and Roma La Sapienza in 1995. He has been visiting researcher at the Institute of Industrial Science (Tokyo, Japan) in 1993 and visiting professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil) in 2008. He is now Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II. He is author of more than 100 research papers on topics related to ground improvement, geotechnical works and soil mechanics, published on the main international journals, on conference proceedings and books. He is author or coauthor of three books. He has delivered general reports and keynote lectures to several International Conferences.

Prof. Renato Lancellotta is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, Director of the Geotechnical Laboratory and has been Head (since 1990) of the Ph.D. Programme of Geotechnical Engineering at the Technical University of Torino, Italy. He was awarded the Bishop Research Medal (Institution of Civil Engineers, London) in 2003.
