《世界名著閱讀叢書：水孩子（英文原著插圖·中文導讀）》是世界上*的童話名著之一，是教育部推薦的中小學生必讀書籍。主人公湯姆是個孤兒，跟著師傅靠掃煙囪維持生計，受盡了他人的凌辱和師傅的虐待，同時染上了不少惡習。一次，他因被誤認為是小偷而受到追捕。逃跑途中，湯姆偶遇仙女，在仙女的引導下，他成為一個水孩子。之后，湯姆開始了奇妙的海底之旅，同水中的各種動物打交道，歷經各種奇遇。在仙女的感化、教育下，湯姆不斷成長，他懂得了真、善、美，并努力克服性格缺陷，成為一個真正的男子漢。
《世界名著閱讀叢書：水孩子（英文原著插圖·中文導讀）》自出版至今，被譯成世界上幾十種語言，并被改編成電影、動畫片、戲劇等。

查爾斯·金斯利（1819-1875），英國19世紀作家、詩人、歷史教授，他還是當時英國的皇家牧師、威爾士王子的教師、牛津大學歷史學教授。代表作有劇作《圣者的悲劇》，長篇小說《酵母》《奧爾頓·洛克》《痕跡》，歷史傳奇小說《西去》等。盡管與皇室來往密切，但金斯利竭力為窮人提供教育，關心窮人幸福，針砭社會弊病，反對當時不合理的兒童教育，強調正確的教育對兒童的重要性，被認為是社會改良主義者。這些觀點在他*為的作品《水孩子》里都得到充分的體現。

Grimes rang at the gate, and out came a keeper othe spot, and opened.
'I was told to expect thee,' he said. 'Now thou'It be so good as to keep to the maiavenue, and not let me find a hare or a rabbit othee whethou est back. I shall look sharp for one, I tell thee.'
'Not if it's ithe bottom of the soot-bag,' quoth Grimes, and at that he laughed; and the keeper laughed and said:
. 'If that's thy sort, I may as well walk up with thee to the hall.'
'I think thou best had. It's thy business to see after thy game, man, and not mine.'
So the keeper went with them; and, to Tom's surprise, he and Grimes chatted together all the way quite pleasantly. He did not know that a keeper is only a poacher turned outside in, and a poacher a keeper turned inside out.
They walked up a great lime avenue, a full mile long, and betweentheir stems Tom peeped trembling at the horns of the sleeping deer,which stood up among the ferns. Tom had never seesuch enormoustrees, and as he looked up he fancied that the blue sky rested otheirheads. But he was puzzled very much by a strange murmuring noise, which followed them all the way. So much puzzled, that at last he took courage to ask the keeper what it was.
He spoke very civilly, and called him Sir, for he was horribly afraid of him, which pleased the keeper, and he told him that they were the bees about the lime flowers.
'What are bees' asked Tom.
'What make honey.'
'What is honey' asked Tom.
'Thou hold thy noise,' said Grimes.
'Let the boy be,' said the keeper. 'He's a civil young chap now, and that's more thahe'Il be long if he bides with thee.'
Grimes laughed, for he took that for a pliment.
'I wish I were a keeper,' said Tom, 'to live isuch a beautiful place, and wear greevelveteens, and have a real dog-whistle at my but- ton, like you.'
The keeper laughed; he was a kind-hearted fellow enough.
'Let well alone, lad, and ill too at times. Thy life's safer thamine at all events, eh, Mr. Grimes'
And Grimes laughed again, and thethe two mebegatalking, quite low. Tom could hear, though, that it was about some poaching fight; and at last Grimes said surlily, 'Hast thou anything against me'
'Not now.'
'Thedon't ask me any questions till thou hast, for I am a maof honour.'
And at that they both laughed again, and thought it a very good joke.
And by this time the came up to the great irogates ifront of the house; and Tom stared through them at the thododendrons and azaleas, which were all iflower; and theat the house itself, and wondered how many chimneys there were iit, and how long ago it was built, and what was the man's name that built it, and whether he got much money for his job
