Theory and Practice of the European Convention on Human Rights

Since the first edition of Theory and Practice of the European Convention on Human Rights forty years ago, this book has become the reference in the field of human rights in Europe. It provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the functioning of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and its application by the European Court of Human Rights. With Montenegro joining the Council of Europe in 2007, there are now 47 Parties to the Convention and Protocol No. 14 entering into force on 1 June 2010, the protection of human rights in Europe and the case law of the Court have seen a dynamic development during the last decade. A completely new - fifth - edition of Theory and Practice of the European Convention on Human Rights was thus very much needed. Particularly since Protocol 14 amended the control system of the Convention. The result is a very accessible, easy-to-use and up-to-date reference book, which provides an essential source of information for the practitioners, theorists and students in the field of human rights.

Pieter Van Dijk was judge at the European Court of Human Rights. In 2006, he was President of the administrative litigation section of the Council of State, a post he resigned in 2013 at the age of 70.He is currently Vice President of the Constitutional Court of Sint Maarten.Arjen van Rijn is Lawyer and Professor Constitutional and administrative law at the University of the Netherlands Antilles, Curacao. He represents the interests of his clients, advises, litigates and practises law. His work area is that of constitutional and administrative law. Arjen van Rijn has been journalist in previous years. Leo Zwaak, LL.M (1975), senior lecturer in the field of International Protection of Human Rights at Utrecht University, senior researcher at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights, visiting professor at the Washington College of Law, American University, and visiting professor at the University of Malta. He has published extensively on issues such as the application and interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights and the effectiveness of the supervisory mechanism.
