Careers in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

This book will convey the scope of chemical and biomolecular engineering practice, with a goal of helping students interested in studying chemical engineering and biomolecular engineering to understand the many potential career pathways that are available for graduates in these dynamic fields. This book will be written so that it can be read by high school students and the general public. This book can serve as a supplement to both introductory courses on chemical engineering theory and calculations, and other "introduction to engineering" college courses that are aimed at helping students decide which branch of engineering (and thus course of study) might be most interesting to them.

Dr. Edwards has 50 years of chemical engineering experience, including the last 30 years with IHI Engineering and Construction International and affiliated companies. He retired from IHI as Director of Process Safety in 2013, and was previously Process Director. Approximately 25 of those 30 years were spent executing engineering projects for ten DuPont plants on the U S Gulf Coast where he led process, environmental, and process safety engineering. His experience includes chemical process design, process safety management including LNG and offshore projects, and process and environmental technologies. He has shared three DuPont awards for excellence in engineering design as well as two DuPont awards for safety, health, and environmental excellence. In 1998, he was named Kvaerner Employee of the Year. Vic was the first Chairman of the Industrial Advisory Council for the Department of Chemical Engineering at Prairie View A & M University, where he received the Distinguished Service Award in 1993. He also received the 2002 Service Award from the Process Safety Center at Texas A & M University, where he chaired the Technical Advisory Committee from 2004-2011. In 2007, Vic’s team received the Process and Construction Award for HSE Excellence in Design from Aker Solutions. He served on the Centennial Council of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University from 2009 to 2013. In 2015, he received the Walton-Miller Award from the Safety and Health Division of AIChE for outstanding chemical engineering contributions to health, safety, and loss prevention in the process industries. Earlier assignments included Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Cornell University, Associate Director of Engineering Chemistry and Manager of Enzyme Technology at the National Science Foundation (on leave from Cornell), pharmaceutical research and development at Merck, alternate energy research at United Energy Resources, Visiting Professor of Environmental Engineering at Rice University, and process and environmental engineering at Fluor

Suzanne Shelley is a New York-based freelance technical writer and editor with nearly 30 years of experience in the global chemical process industries (CPI). She spent 17 years as a full-time editor at Chemical Engineering magazine (then a McGraw-Hill publication, now owned by Access Intelligence), from 1989 to 2005, including five years as Managing Editor. While on staff, Suzanne launched two spinoff (sister) publications — Environmental Engineering World (where she served as Executive Editor for all 21 issues, 1992-1996), and ePlant (where she as Managing Editor for all 7 issues, 2000-2001). In 2003, Suzanne also conceived, created and launched the magazine’s "Build Your Engineering Library," a product line of tear-sheet books (featuring collections of practical, how-to engineering articles that had been published in the magazine over the prior several years); 12 different books/CDs were produced, each covering a different chemical engineering topic, with individual books ranging in length from 150 to 450 pages).Since 2005, Suzanne has been Principal/Owner of Precision Prose, Inc., through which she provides freelance technical writing, editing and ghostwriting expertise to numerous publications, companies, public relations agencies and consultancies. Since establishing Precision Prose, in 2005, Suzanne has been a regular freelance Contributing Editor at both Chemical Engineering magazine and Pharmaceutical Commerce magazine, authoring and editing articles in most issues.
