As a Liberal he and his family were targeted by Conservatives， who were killing any Liberals that they could find.With no grand politicalproclamations he gathered together a band of angry peasants like himself and took up whatever arms were in reach and fought back.Over time， Marin formulated a rcdistributive agenda， named his rebel group the FARC， and went to war with the government.Marin spent his entire adult life， over forty years， as a guerrilla fighter， better known as Manuel Marulanda Velez.
In the beginning the FARC financed their revolutionary fight with the help of rural communities， who supplied food， shelter， and medical attention.The guerrillas became the heroes of the countryside， fighting the rich in the name of the poor.Today the FARC fund their activities to the tune of U$$500—600 million a year from their involvement in the illegal narcotics trade， coupled with kidnapping and cxtortion， and enforce their demands with explosives— bombing Bogota restaurants， clubs， government installations，and local businesses， killing many over the years and instilling fear in residents.
