Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Healthcare for Migrants ― Perspectives from the Uk and Germany

Commentary on the migrant crisis and healthcare has primarily focused on the allocation of resources with little discussion of the needs of and provision for the migrants. Presenting a comparative study of the UK and Germany, this volume increases our knowledge of a broad spectrum of challenges in healthcare provision for migrants. Despite their differences, each country has confronted similar challenges, albeit offering different responses. ‘Migration’ is deliberately understood in its broadest sense and includes not only migrant patients but also migrant healthcare professionals. The book’s focus is predominantly on healthcare ethics, with insights from, and reflection on, healthcare law, along with clinical and sociological perspectives. The collection provides theoretical and normative reflections on current issues, and presents data from empirical studies. By informing researchers, politicians and healthcare practitioners about approaches to challenges in healthcare provision for migrants, the work aims to inform the development of adequate and ethically legitimate strategies.

Katja Kuehlmeyer, Dr. rer. biol. hum., is Research Associate at the Institute of Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine at LMU Munich. She works on various topics at the intersection of psychology, health and ethics.

Corinna Klingler, MSc, is currently finishing her PhD-research on integration of migrant physicians in Germany at the Institute of Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine at LMU Munich. As of September she will be working on translational bioethics as a postdoctoral researcher at the QUEST Centre in Berlin.

Richard Huxtable, LLB, MA, PhD, is Professor of Medical Ethics and Law and Director of the Centre for Ethics in Medicine, University of Bristol, UK.
