Macroeconomic Theory and the Eurozone Crisis

The financial crisis of 2007 required the economics discipline to thoroughly re-evaluate its prevailing theories about economic cycles and economic growth. With a focus on Europe, this volume identifies the latest strands of research on business cycles, monetary theory, the evolution of social policies and public spending, and the institutional context of the European Union. It also considers whether these new ideas could have helped us avoid the crisis, and how they might reshape the current economic paradigm.

Alain Alcouffe is Professor Emeritus at Toulouse University, France. He has published many articles and book chapters on industrial and regional economics, economics of knowledge, economics of education, and the history of economic thought. He has served as head of Toulouse University Network (2001–2005) and president of the International Walras Association (2013–2015).

Maurice Basle is Emeritus Professor at University of Rennes 1, France, and an active researcher in CNRS. He has published two textbooks and many articles on the history of economic thought, and he was awarded a Jean Monnet chair ad personam in 2012. He has been assigned as Chaire Connaissance et Action Territorial at the University of South Brittany for promoting the use of the digital revolution in public service.

Monika Poettinger teaches economic history and history of economic thought at Bocconi University, Milan, Italy. She has published many articles and book chapters on the industrialization process in Italy, merchant networks and German entrepreneurial migrations. Her research interests include economic and cultural history, particularly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
