The Khat Conundrum in Ethiopia ― Socioeconomic Impacts and Policy Directions

The cultivation of Khat and production of the addictive drug from it are a major source of income for Ethiopians and of foreign trade for the country as a whole. Admassie presents a qualitative study about the socioeconomic impacts of Khat through the perceptions of various categories of residents in Harar and Assosa Cities and federal-level authorities and institutions as well as his own observations. Generating primary data, he identifies trends of Khat consumption and addition at different levels--household (family), community, and countrywide.
