The novel covers most of Su Shi's life, from the time he went to the capital for the Imperial Examination to his death. With the portrayal of diverse historical figures in Su Shi's life, the novel reveals a microcosm of society in Su Shi's time. All historical events in the novel are based on reliable records. With artistic creation rooted in historical reality, the author shows a style that is both biographic and dramatic. The author faithfully reproduces historical events with her own artistic interpretations in the portrayal of Su Shi's relation with Wang Anshi, Sima Guang and five emperors, and of Su Shi's ups and downs in the political struggles between the “new and old policies.” Drawing on dramatic devices, the author tells stories in such a readable way that readers will find it easy to understand Su Shi and his time.
