From the late 1700s until the end of the 19th Century, the British Empire established, expanded, and maintained many colonies on the continent of Australia. These colonies included New South Wales, Van Diemen's Land, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland.

About 10,000 Soldiers and Marines remained in Australia on discharge. Hundreds lost their lives protecting communities against the indigenous defenders of their lands and marauding bushrangers. They founded the Australian Police Forces, built communities, started the Australian Railways, and built the most challenging roads. They left behind in Australia 30,000 first-generation Australians. This book sets out to explain who and what the British Army in Australia was about.
