I killed my first vampire at the age of five. They locked me away for years, said I was crazy, that I'd made it all up. But I know what really happened and what could happen again if I don't play it safe.

Something dark lives within me, and it's clawing to get out. I've exiled myself to the Alaskan tundra, knowing that as long as I stay out of the heat, there won't be any wildfires.

And then a death in the family summons me to the town I fled long ago. Maxxan, Texas. I have memories here-some of them good, most of them bad.

Now I'm being told I must stay for one whole year to satisfy the conditions of my late grandmother's will. I'm just about to give up on learning my family's long-kept secrets and obtaining my sizeable inheritance when I'm found out.
