Confidence Woman: The making of a leader in women, Becoming a leading voice in the society

Personal encounters in the financial services sector sparked my interest for developing women in leadership. Unfortunately, I didn't have many professional female role models to look up to and aspire to, particularly early in my career. I also noted right away that women were often the targets of preconceptions and stereotypes, which were brought to the forefront when they were in positions of leadership or were being considered for a promotion or special project. I saw that although males were commended for being forceful or aggressive, women who exhibited the same qualities were criticized for being pushy, obstinate, or bossy. Women were often said to be "too difficult to work for," whereas males were strict taskmasters. Women were chastised for lacking perspective, taking things personally, and being too sentimental to make tough choices.

I started to doubt my ability to develop in my field after being rejected from a few leadership positions. I made the decision that the best approach for me to stand out was to work in sales and increase revenue for the business since the sales figures would unbiasedly show how I performed in comparison to my male contemporaries. In light of this, I decided to work as a wholesaler before rising to the position of top salesman at the company. I was able to advance and eventually become the President of Distribution for a major investment management business thanks to my achievements, which also helped me get a highly sought-after managerial job.

I was committed to promote change and serve as a strong female role model since I had experienced some prejudice while competing with my male peers for leadership and power positions. In a patriarchal society, I wanted to inspire women to realize their full leadership potential.
