Marriage is a formal and durable sexual union of one or more men and one or more women, which is conducted within a set of designated rights and duties. The term "formal" means socially approved and "durable" means with the intent of permanence. "Sexual Union" refers to sexual intimacies, including sexual intercourse; "conducted within a set of designated rights and duties" mean that in a marital relationship there are statuses and roles. A status is a position in society, such on policeman, teacher, student mother, or friend; in a marriage relationship the specific statuses are those of husband and wife. Role is the term used to refer to the expectation made of a person in a specific status, both in regard to the rights permitted to him and the duties expected of him.
