In medical practice, treating the ear was traditionally associated with treating the eye. The connection between the ear and throat was discovered during the late 19th century's development of laryngology, and otologists and laryngologists became associated.
Until the first half of the 19th century, when Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard and Prosper M幯i鋨e made systematic investigation of ear physiology and disease, the study of ear diseases did not have a clear scientific basis. William R. Wilde of Dublin was the first person to develop the field's scientific foundation.
