'Barbarism and Religion' - Edward Gibbon's own phrase - is the title of a sequence of works by John Pocock designed to situate Gibbon, and his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, in a series of contexts in the history of eighteenth-century Europe. Originally published in 1952, as part of the Cambridge Plain Texts series, this volume contains essays by Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803). A key Enlightenment figure, and the early mentor of Goethe, he was a prominent instigator of the 'Storm and Stress' movement in eighteenth-century Germany. With his recognition that the subject of the Decline and Fall demanded treatment of both the patristic as well as the papal church, Edward Gibbon's intellectual trajectory is both similar but at points crucially distinct from the dominant Latin 'Enlightened narrative' these writers developed. This book was originally published in 1954. Grahame Clark's excavations at Star Carr from 1949 to 1951 have long been regarded as a model of how archaeological investigation should be conducted. In addition to this, the importance of the site itself, the first early mesolithic site in Europe from which a full complement of bone, antler, wood and other organic material was recovered alongside the flint industry, has established for this report on the excavations a permanent place in all archaeological libraries. First published in 1971 this volume claims that nitration is important for two reasons. First, because it is the most general process for the preparation of aromatic nitro-compounds, and secondly, on account of the part it has played in the development of theoretical organic chemistry. The special concern of this monograph is with those nitrating systems in which mechanistic studies have established, or made probable, the identity of the agent through which they effect nitration. It presents a summary of the understanding of the nitration process. A discussion of the various types of nitrating systems leads to the conclusion that nitration is generally effected through the nitronium ion. The mechanism of the substitution is examined, and discussed in terms of reactivity for particular groups of aromatic compounds.

At first glance the prime numbers appear to be distributed in a very irregular way amongst the integers, but it is possible to produce a simple formula that tells us (in an approximate but well defined sense) how many primes we can expect to find that are less than any integer we might choose.
