A Library of Light
滿額折
作者:Danielle Vogel  出版社:Wesleyan Univ Pr  出版日:2024/02/04 裝訂:精裝
Incantation and elegy shine through one another in this extraordinary poetic memoirWhen poet Danielle Vogel began writing meditations on the syntax of earthen and astral light, she had no idea that her mother's tragic death would eclipse the writing of that book, turning her attention to grief's syntax and quiet fields of cellular light in the form of memory. Written in elegant, crystalline prose poems, A Library of Light is a memoir that begins and ends in an incantatory space, one in which light speaks. At the book's center glows a more localized light: the voice of the poet as she reflects, with ceremonial patience, on the bioluminescence of the human body, language's relationship to lineage, her mother's journals written during years of estrangement from her daughter, and the healing potential of poetry. A mesmerizing elegy infused with studies of epigenetic theory and biophotonics, A Library of Light shows that to language is to take part in transmission, transmutation of energy

作者:Kay Peggs  出版社:PBKTYFRL  出版日:2021/12/31 裝訂:精裝
Experiments, Animal Bodies and Human Values presents a sociological examination of the ethics of using animals in biomedical experiments, exploring the manner in which science and technology have sought to advance the human body project by using animals as a resource for human gain. Such scientific developments are typically viewed as progress, a notion challenged by this book's analysis of the ways in which the animal body is exploited - and has become increasingly exploitable - in a bid to protect the human body project from perceived risks to health. Drawing on themes and issues in sociology, such as the construction and commodification of the body, risk in society and identity politics, Experiments, Animal Bodies and Human Values offers a rich discussion of the human use of non-human animals, shedding light on human embodiment and its relation to animal bodies. A timely and sophisticated exploration of key issues of moral and sociological concern, this book will appeal to those

作者:Lise Wilkinson  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:1992/03/19 裝訂:精裝
Man's attempts to learn about aspects of the human body and its functions by observation and study of animals are to be found throughout history, especially at times and in cultures where the human body was considered sacrosanct, even after death. This book describes the origins and later development, especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, of comparative medicine and its interrelationship with medicine and veterinary medicine and the efforts of its practitioners to understand and control outbreaks of infectious, epidemic diseases in humans and in domestic animals. In the nineteenth century their efforts and increasing professionalism led to the creation of specialised institutes devoted to the study of comparative medicine. This book sheds much new light on the medical and veterinary history of this period and will provide a new perspective on the history of bacteriology. Historians of science will find the book of great value.
